In the past 15 years, the average number of times a garment is worn has decreased by 36%. On average, clothes are only worn 7- 10 times before they're discarded (source: Ellen MacArthur Foundation). Fast fashion turns out to be too fast.
Creating a sustainable lifestyle isn't about perfection, it's about making better choices. Living less out of habit and more out of intent.
As we all try to do our bit, here's some affordable tips to a more sustainable wardrobe.
Wardrobe refresh
Start with what you already have. Do a declutter Marie Kondo style by laying everything in your wardrobe out. Try donating, selling or giving away clothes you don't want anymore. Instead of replacing, is there anything that can be repaired? Then grab a friend, your canvas shopping bags and try shopping secondhand.
Choose slow fashion
Avoid fast fashion and poorly made synthetic clothing that quickly falls apart. Maybe it's time to shift gears and think about your wardrobe a little differently. When you buy new, choose well-made, quality pieces you'll wear again and again.
Top tips
1. Shop with a list of the staples you need to avoid impulse buying.
2. Choose simple, considered pieces that are humble and not showy.
3. Look for gear that's been built to last, so it stays out of landfill.
4. Choose designs that aren't obsolete with the changing of seasons.
5. Only buy things you'll wear 30 times or more.
6. Choose clothes and accessories that function as they need to.
7. Don't buy stuff you don't need just because it's cheap.
